Animal Control Officers enforce the County Ordinances and Resolution enacted by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners that relate to Animal Control and Animal Welfare. These animal control resolutions are R-998-100 and Revision Resolution R-999-177: Resolution for the Control and Licensing of Dogs and Pet Animals, and Ordinance O-992-001: Resolution to Adopt an Ordinance to Control Wild or Exotic Animals.  Patrol Deputies can also enforce any of the Animal Control Resolutions, Ordinances and Colorado revised Statutes.  Deputies have assisted Animal Control Officers in the past in joint investigations into very serious vicious dog cases and animal cruelty cases.

The State Department of Agriculture also commissions certain Animal Control Officers to enforce Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.) relating to Animal Welfare.  These Statutes include Vicious Dog, Animal Cruelty, and Public Health related statutes that govern the spread of rabies and the impoundment of animals that are suspected of rabies.
