Forged Arkansas State Checks
On August 10th the Arkansas Attorney General began receiving reports of phony State of Arkansas checks being passed across the country. To date these checks have surfaced in 18 states. The scam is believed to originate in Turkey with victims selected from people who post their resumes on the Internet, especially on the Careerbuilder website. Victims are told that an overseas company wants to hire them to process checks from US customers. When the victim agrees, they receive one or more of the phony State of Arkansas checks for deposit in their personal account. After depositing they are instructed to withdraw most of the money (less their commission) and send it to their new employer. Of course the Arkansas checks are worthless, and someone loses the cash which was forwarded to the scammers.
To
Protect Yourself:
- Ask yourself why any intelligent and sane individual or company would send legitimate checks or any funds to a perfect stranger. What is to prevent you from cashing those checks and disappearing? Would you send a check to a person you never met and trust him or her to cash the check and send most of the money back? Don’t let greed take control. Stop and think! This scam makes no sense.
- Never do business with a stranger! Check them out first.
