New Permits
An applicant shall complete the permit application and return it, in person, to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 4000 Justice Way, Castle Rock. The completed application will only be accepted Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Prior to arriving at the Sheriff’s Office the applicant must sign the completed permit application in person, before a notary public; upon a sworn oath that the applicant knows the contents of the permit application and that the information contained in the permit application is true and correct.
When the application is turned in during the above days and times, the applicant will have their photograph and fingerprints taken. Please ensure that you have sufficient time allocated to complete the entire process.
In addition to the completed application form, you must submit:
- A $52.50 processing fee in the form of a cashier’s check or money order, made payable to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
- A $100.00 processing fee in the form of a cashier’s check, money order or personal check, made payable to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
- Proof of Douglas County Residency.
- Documentary evidence demonstrating competence with a handgun as specified in the Training Section of the Application Information Packet.

Permit Renewals
Within 120 days prior to expiration of a permit, the permitee will receive by mail the following: a renewal application form, and an Affidavit of Continued Firearms Qualification form, from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Complete the renewal application form, sign and have both forms notarized. A notary will be available at the Sheriff Office when the renewal is submitted at a cost of $5.00.
The renewal fee made payable to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will be $50.00 and can be presented in the form of a personal check, business check, money order or cash at the time of submission.
A seperate check or money order for CBI to perform an Insta-Check background investigation in the amount of $13.00 made payable to CBI, or to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, must be presented in the form of a Cashiers Check, Certified Check or Money Order. CBI will not accept a Personal Check or Cash.
The completed renewal application, completed affidavit, and fee must be presented IN PERSON at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office records section. PLEASE DO NOT MAIL THE APPLICATION OR FEE.
A new photo will be taken and our database will be updated. The new permit will be exchanged for the old permit within 7 to 10 days.
