Sheriff David A Weaver being sworn in by Judge Curry

As the Sheriff of Douglas County, it is one of my top priorities to keep the citizens of our county informed of what is occurring in our community through forums such as our website. It is through sharing of information with our citizens that we are able to build upon important relationships that will enhance the safety of our community.

We will continue to update the website with information that specifically addresses our community to include general information about the Office and the services that are available to our community. With that being said, my hope is that our website will continue to be of assistance to our citizens by keeping our community informed, in addition to serving as a format to discuss solutions to problems that our community may be facing.

Summer Safety Tips For Children and Parents

Summer is an extremely important time for parents to talk to their children about safety issues pertinent to the season.  The warm weather brings out more children, but it also brings out strangers that our children need to watch out for.  The following tips are provided to help you and your children have a safe summer.

For Parents and Children:

  • Always check first with your parents before you go anywhere or do anything.  Be sure to CHECK IN regularly when you are not with them.
  • Always TAKE A FRIEND with you when playing or going anywhere.  It is safer and more fun.
  • Don’t be tricked by people who offer you special treats or gifts.  Never accept anything from anyone without your parents’ or guardian’s permission.
  • Never go into a public restroom by yourself.
  • Never go alone to malls, movies, video arcades, or parks.  Take a friend with you and always check first with your parents or guardian to make sure it’s okay.
  • Don’t panic if you feel lost.  Identify the safest place to go or person to ask to help in reuniting you with your parents or guardian.  Safe helpers could be a uniformed law-enforcement or security office, store salesperson with a nametag, person with a nametag working at the information booth, or a mother with children.  Never search for your parents on your own, and never go with anyone who is trying to reunite you with them.
  • Be careful when you play.  Stay away from pools, canals, and other bodies of water unless you are with a trusted adult.  Don’t play near busy streets or deserted areas, and never take shortcuts unless you have your parents’ or guardian’s permission.
  • Don’t get into a car or go near a car with anyone in it unless you are with your parents or another trusted adult.  Never take a ride from anyone without CHECKING FIRST with your parents or guardian.
  • Don’t be afraid to say NO and GET AWAY from any situation that makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused.  TRUST YOUR FEELINGS, and be sure to TELL a trusted adult if anything happens that makes you feel this way.

As your Sheriff I strongly believe that building relationships with the community allows the Sheriff’s Office to become more effective in our commitment to you the citizen of Douglas County, serving with Leadership, Integrity and Service Excellence for our community.
