The mission of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division is to effectively, ethically and professionally investigate criminal complaints and to focus on excellence in the preparation of those cases referred to the District Attorney for prosecution.

The Investigation Division is responsible for responding to requests by the public, patrol and detentions divisions, and the District Attorney to identify, apprehend and assist in the prosecution of criminals who prey upon the citizens of Douglas County.

The General Investigations Section is responsible for handling requests for criminal investigation that are received on a daily basis.  The section consists of three specialty units, Person Crimes, Special Victims, and Property Crimes.

In addition to General Investigations, the Investigations Division has focused its resources into two specialized sections: the Special Investigations Section and Victim Assistance Section.

The Special Investigation Section is responsible for the coordination and management of a number of operations including:

  • Concealed Weapons Permits
  • Sex Offender Registration
  • Liquor Licensing
  • Intelligence Systems and Databases
  • Investigation of Auto Theft
  • Investigation of Gang-Related Crime
  • Investigation of Multi-Jurisdictional Crime
  • Homeland Security

Investigation of Narcotics Crime. Please click on the South Metro Drug Task Force (SMDTF) link  www.smdtf.org

  • Investigation of High-Tech crimes (see the High Tech Section)

The High-Tech Crimes Section investigates white-collar and computer crimes.  The tremendous growth of the northern retail corridor combined with the growing demand for computers in households, schools and businesses has generated a marked increase in computer and Internet crime.  Fraud, ID theft and Internet crimes pose a significant threat to the citizens of Douglas County.  The cases are difficult to prosecute because they often involve multiple jurisdictions, crossing state and national boundaries.  As a member of the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the High-Tech Crimes Unit also investigates predators who target children on the Internet.  Besides undercover Internet stings, the unit provides Internet safety instruction to students, parents, and school administrators.

The Victim Assistance Section serves victims of violent crime and family survivors in cases of violent and sudden death.  Victim Advocates provide information, support and referrals as required by the Colorado constitutional amendment for victim’s rights.  They also act as a liaison between the victim and the criminal justice system.  The advocates are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Each advocate carries a pager and cell phone used to assist victims in locating family members and friends, and to get information from hospitals and assistance from other agencies. Staff members have years of experience working with victims and the court system, and are experts on victim compensation programs and legislative issues. With the use of a specialized computer program, Advocates can track services and get information to victims more efficiently.  Using community volunteers, grant funding and advanced technology, the Victim Assistance Unit is able to provide immeasurable comfort to victims and their families while minimizing the cost to county taxpayers.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab is staffed with two evidence technicians and four crime scene investigators. Photography and photographic processing, latent fingerprint processing, crime scene investigation and processing, autopsy evidence collection, crime scene reconstruction, presumptive drug testing, and evidence examination are just some of the duties carried out by these technicians. The proper collection and storage of evidence is just as important as the evidence itself.  The courts demand that strict rules and procedures be followed in order to have evidence admitted during a criminal proceeding.
