In December 2009, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a former youth minister at the Denver Church of Christ. The Sheriff’s Office received information that William “Bill” McLaughlin, age 45, had a sexual relationship with a child who was involved in the church.
Detectives with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office arrested McLaughlin on December 17, 2009, and he remains in custody at the Douglas County Detentions Facility on a $500,000.00 bond. He is currently charged with multiple felony counts including sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.
Detectives said that McLaughlin has been associated with the Denver Church of Christ for up to 20 years and he has come in contact with hundreds of children. The Church has satellite churches in multiple locations in Colorado and throughout the United States. McLaughlin also has a history of extensive travel. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating because McLaughlin lived in multiple locations in Douglas County for several years and that is where some of the crimes took place. McLaughlin has also lived in other Denver metro area locations. This investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone who has information about additional victims, or any inappropriate conduct by McLaughlin to call the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division at (303) 660-7548 and ask for Detective Dea Aragon or Detective Christine Brite.
“It is very tragic to hear about these types of cases, especially when it involves someone who is put in a position to care for and guide our youth. It is a great reminder for parents to talk to their children about issues involving these types of cases and how important open and honest communication is”, stated Sheriff Dave Weaver.
The case has been sealed by the Court and no other information is available at this time.
