As your Sheriff, I always appreciate the opportunity to help you stay informed and bring you up to date about your Sheriff’s Office.
Since you first elected me your Sheriff in 2006, I have worked every day to serve with strong character, to be a good steward of your tax dollars, to maintain open lines of communication, and to implement creative programs that ultimately make our community better by maximizing resources and which solve and prevent serious crime. Considering the tense economic times, these goals were necessary to prepare for future challenges and to best serve your changing needs.
Some of our most recent exciting changes and accomplishments include:
Savings & Restructure – Downsized command/supervisory personnel and streamlined operations to save taxpayers $5 million since 2006.
Public Safety Advisory Committee – Created a citizen’s advisory committee to gain citizen input on agency operations, community needs, and our finances and the budget.
Character First Program – Implemented an agency-wide leadership model that promotes good character and its role in community trust, communication, service, and teamwork.
Community Safety Volunteer Program – Added the talents of dozens of professional and skilled volunteers—all to provide quicker service and information to the community. These volunteers have been vital, providing over 40,000 hours of free service.
Highlands Ranch Substation – Opening a service-enhancing substation in the Highlands Ranch Town Center to provide better service and accessibility. Grand Opening – fall 2010.
Sex Offender Database and Fugitive Lists – Redesigned our website with a public database of applicable local registered sex offenders and most wanted fugitives.
CrimeReports.com – Implemented this new internet program so that citizens can more easily get information about crime in their areas. Access it at www.dcsheriff.net.
Youth Education and Safety in Schools – Pioneered the YESS Program, which places deputies in middle schools to teach teens how to better handle peer pressure, make better decisions, how to avoid drugs and alcohol, and topics of Internet and cyber safety.
Text-a-Tip Program – Created this modern program so high school students can report safety problems in real time via cell phone text message. Our Text-a-Tip program has been a national model for other agencies and is well used by our students.
New Citizen Alert System – Implemented the new Everbridge System, which allows us to contact thousands of citizens in seconds to notify them of an emergency.
Mediation Program – A distinctive program that offers citizens a better way to mediate disputes by utilizing the skills and services of an impartial mediator.
2010 Crime Victim Services Award – Awarded by the National Sheriff’s Association for having the nation’s most outstanding crime victim services program.
Criminal Case Solvability – I am proud that we solve major crime cases at a rate that far exceeds the national average.
I will continue to lead our agency to overcome new challenges and adapt services to meet your needs. I have dedicated my entire 28-year law enforcement career to the service of Douglas County; and your wellbeing is very important to me.
