Back to School Safety Tips
Now that most of the schools in Douglas County are back in session, it is important for everyone to keep some basic safety tips in mind.
Tips for School Bus Riders:
Do not play in the street while waiting for the bus.
Wait for the bus driver to signal you before crossing the street.
Walk at least 10 steps away from the front of the bus so the driver can see you.
Never reach under the bus to get anything that has fallen beneath it.
Once inside, remain seated at all times.
Do not shout or distract the driver unnecessarily.
After getting off the bus, move onto the sidewalk and out of traffic.
Tips for Walkers or Bike Riders:
Always walk to and from school with friends.
Pay attention to all traffic signals and crossing guards along the way.
Always wear a helmet when riding your bike.
Tips for Drivers and Passengers:
Every person in the vehicle must buckle up.
Drop children off as close to school as possible. Avoid the need for children to cross the street.
Follow all posted speed limits.
Be extra careful around school buses. When the red lights are flashing you must STOP.
Wait for a few extra minutes after the bus is gone to ensure that there are no children present.
As always, motorists must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Remind teenagers to take extra precautions if they are driving to school or riding with another teenage driver.
Be a good role model for other kids and parents by making the right safety choices each day, on your way to and from school.
