I would like to warn citizens about the incorrect information that some phone solicitors are giving out. Many unscrupulous people are trying to get people to hand over their hard earned money to an organization that does not exist. They may also tell you that your funds will go directly to the law enforcement agency in your area. More than likely this information is not true.
We want citizens to question anyone or organization that solicits over the phone. Ask for an address and call back number. Ask that they send you information about the organization and where the money will go. Under no circumstances should you give them any personal or bank information over the phone.
It is also important to know that most reputable agencies seeking donations will not do so over the phone. It has been a common practice to request donations through the mail. We do not solicit funds over the phone. The only agency that the Sheriff’s Office endorses to do any fundraising in the county is the County Sheriff’s Of Colorado. The funds primarily go towards the training of law enforcement officers statewide.
It is estimated there are thousands of fraudulent telemarketing operations calling American consumers every day. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that one out of every six consumers is the victim of telemarketing criminals annually. Many of those victims are senior citizens.
If you have any questions or think a fraudulent solicitor may have called you, please call the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at (303) 660-7505.
