WHAT: FREE SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAININGS IN DOUGLAS COUNTY
NARRATIVE: The Douglas County Suicide Prevention Alliance will host FREE community trainings to try to mitigate this year’s steep increase in suicides among middle-aged men. Douglas County has seen 34 suicides in the first nine months of 2011, only two fewer than the total number of suicides in 2010. This number does not take into account the thousands of people who have thoughts of suicide every day or those who attempt to take their life.
Upcoming trainings are:
safeTALK – December 1, 2011 from 1-4pm, Castle Rock, CO – Contact Phyllis Harvey to register
safeTALK is a three-hour training that prepares anyone over age 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help. www.livingworks.net
ASIST – February 2-3, April 19-20, and June 7-8 – Contact Mike Arnold to register, 303-387-0122, email@example.com
ASIST is a two-day, interactive program that teaches participant to recognize a person at-risk, help keep the person safe and help the person seeking help. www.livingworks.net
QPR – Contact Mike Arnold to schedule a workshop, 303-387-0122, firstname.lastname@example.org
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer – three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. People trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help. QPR can be learned in as little as one hour. www.qprinstitute.com
