As the holidays approach, it is a busy time for shoppers, retailers and thieves. Preparation is the best defense against becoming a victim. Consumers are likely to visit crowded stores and malls during the holiday shopping season. Fraudsters know this, so they are likely to be there also. Consumers should follow the following holiday shopping safety tips to help reduce their chances of becoming a victim.
- Plan ahead. Shop during daylight hours if possible. If shopping at night, go with a friend.
- If shopping with children, make a plan on what to do if separated. Teach them to ask security or mall personnel for help.
- Dress casually and comfortably.
- Avoid wearing expensive looking jewelry.
- Only carry what you need.
- Don’t carry excessive amounts of cash.
- Consider using a credit card. You have better protection against fraud.
- Women should carry their purse close to the body, strap over their head and across chest.
- Men should carry their wallet in a front pocket. Consider putting a rubber band around it to create friction if pick pocketed.
- Park near mall/store entrance, close to light pole.
- Don’t leave anything in plain sight inside your vehicle, such as a GPS or briefcase.
- Lock vehicle upon departure.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- When making a purchase, don’t take out your wallet until needed for payment.
- Carry receipt in wallet or purse.
- Don’t overload arms with packages to help avoid mishaps.
- Be wary of strangers approaching you for any reason. It is the season of giving, but solicitors might be waiting to see how much cash you are carrying.
- When departing the mall/store, have your key or key fob in your hand.
- Do not proceed to your vehicle if feel threatened, return to the store.
- Check vehicle before entry. Place packages in trunk. If you have an SUV or van, cover packages with a blanket.
- Consider moving vehicle to a new location if doing more shopping. Thieves monitor parking lots.
If you become a victim of a crime, report it to mall security and your local law enforcement agency. The District Attorney’s Consumer Protection Line provides assistance to victims of crime and answers questions on white collar crime issues.
