Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Youth Education and Safety in Schools (Y.E.S.S.) Program Receives Motorola Solutions Foundation Public Safety Grant
Grant to support safety education and training programs
NARRATIVE: December 3, 2012 – Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Youth Education and Safety in Schools (Y.E.S.S.) Program, a comprehensive and evidence-based educational program taught by law enforcement for students within the Douglas County School District, today announced it has received $15,000.00 as part of the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety and Security Institute. The Motorola Solutions Foundation is the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions Inc. Through the grant, the DCSO Y.E.S.S. program will continue the research began in 2011 that helps to validate the evidence based strategies used and that outcomes are truly being met. Specifically that we are helping to delay the onset of and reducing risky behavior in Douglas County middle school aged students. The program also has lessons that are taught in the elementary schools, high schools, a high school based Text-A-Tip program and a community suicide prevention program. The funds will also be used to develop and make available to middle school students a workbook for the program which will increase the retention of the lessons learned by students and parents. The middle school program is being taught in 6 of the 8 middle schools in Douglas County and 5 charter schools that have 7th and 8th graders. The Parker and Castle Rock Police Departments are partnering with the Sheriff’s Office to make it possible to reach over 8,529 middle school students. That doesn’t include how many students we are reaching with the elementary and high school programs. To our knowledge no other law enforcement agencies in the State are doing a program like this.
The Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety Grants aim to support safety education and training programs for first responders, their families and the general public in the United States and Canada.
Sheriff David A. Weaver said, “The youth of our community are our most precious resource and we must work together in a collaborative effort to do everything we can to give our children the tools to stay safe. This grant will allow us to take things to the next level in our efforts to be proactive as opposed to reactive.
“Motorola Solutions is dedicated to helping people be their best in the moments that matter,” said Matt Blakely, director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “Motorola Solutions Foundation aligns itself with this mission by supporting programs like the Y.E.S.S. program that train people how to respond to potential safety problems or recover from the loss of a first responder. We are proud to see these valuable programs make a positive impact in the communities where we live and work, such as Douglas County.”
Through the Public Safety and Security Institute, the Motorola Solutions Foundation serves as an investor, convener and supporter of issues that affect the public safety of communities worldwide, providing leadership in the sector to drive innovation and grow and engage the network of those interested in these issues.
