Traffic Unit

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to the safe and efficient movement of traffic on the county’s highways. In any society, traffic enforcement is of the utmost concern. To address these concerns, the Sheriff’s Office operates a 12-person Traffic Unit, which includes a 6-person motorcycle unit and two officers assigned to the Aggressive Driving “Road Rage” Dodge Charger.

The Traffic Unit has deputies assigned to many different functions to help ensure the safety of the motoring public and the enforcement of all laws. Traffic enforcement deputies assist with all traffic related matters, thus freeing up road patrol officers and allowing them to apply their time to more immediate patrol duties. All traffic Deputies have specialized training in Accident Investigation, utilizing state of the art crash scene mapping technology and computer aided drawing systems as well as DUI and Aggressive Driving Enforcement, all while attempting to identify high accident areas, analyze data and apply problem solving techniques in the resolution of traffic problems.

Traffic Unit and Equipment

The Traffic Unit uses the latest in radar and laser speed detection technology, mobile camera equipment, and mobile computers. These tools help officers ensure that our motorists arrive at their destinations safely as well as gather the evidence that they need for successful prosecution of traffic violations.

Both Patrol and Traffic Deputies annually cite over 23,000 offenders, arrest nearly 600 drivers for Driving Under the Influence and investigate over 1,300 accidents. As society and the motoring public grows, laws affecting road use also changes which requires a flexible yet firm approach. The County Ordinances relating to traffic and parking are:

A part of the Sheriff’s Office commitment to the safety of the citizens of Douglas County, traffic enforcement deputies regularly take part in educational programs and other high visibility events. DUI checkpoints, commercial vehicle checkpoints, child restraint clinics, community meetings, and school presentations are a few examples of the educational and high visibility functions of the unit.
