Monitoring Douglas County for speeding violations is a never ending challenge for the Sheriff’s Office. Oftentimes the very presence of a police vehicle is all it takes to reform the worst repeat offenders, and with a finite number of on duty officers, many other policing issues can quickly take priority on any given day.
But our residents do contact the Traffic Unit with reports of speeding cut-through traffic within their neighborhood streets, and it’s an issue that concerns us all.
To help focus our efforts on speeding in the coming months, the Traffic Unit has invested in what’s known as a Kustom Signals Stealth Stat. This small computer can be unobtrusively mounted on a pole to gather data on the frequency of traffic and speeds on any given road.
From the resulting report, officers can obtain details of the lowest and highest speeds that occurred during this time period, identify the average speed, and determine whether or not there is a higher preponderance of motorists traveling above the posted speed limit on any given street. This will allow them to identify the difference between actual and perceived speeding problems, and to focus their prevention efforts where they are most needed.
Beginning in early 2006 Stealth Stat is a tool you can request for use in your neighborhood, if you believe you’re experiencing issues with speeding motorists. Typically, the Stealth Stat will be in one particular area for a period of approximately three days before moving on again, and request fulfillment is subject to availability and the order in which requests are received. Please note - a large number of requests are anticipated and it might take three or more months before the Sheriff’s can address your request.
When the program is up and running Stealth Stat results will be posted on this section of the Sheriff’s office web site, enabling residents to check in and periodically see the results for their particular area of interest.
If you would like to know more about the Stealth Stat program, or would like to request it be used in your neighborhood, please contact Technician Adam Cataffo 303-660-7567 ext 6865.
