K-9 Moose and Deputy Brent Pfannenstiel

K9 Moose and Deputy Pfannenstiel

Brent started his Law Enforcement career in Kansas in 1994. He returned to Colorado in 1999 and became a Deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. In August of 2001, he was assigned to the Sheriff's K-9 Unit and has been working with K-9 Moose since.

K-9 Moose is a German Shepherd. K-9 Moose has been with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office since October of 2001. He was born in Germany in March 2000. His parents are Waldo Von Lehrbacher and Sirokkoi Pam. This makes Moose a pedigree dog. He moved to Alabama for a few months until he was purchased by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

K9 MooseThe purchase was made possible by a donation from the Red Rocks Federal Credit Union in Highlands Ranch. Since his adoption, K-9 Moose has been handled by Deputy Brent Pfannenstiel and has become an integral part of the K-9 Unit. Moose's hobbies are sniffing out drugs, catching criminals and playing Kong Ball.

Greg Howden

Deputy Gregory Howden has been with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office since May 2002. He joined the K-9 Unit in May of 2003. Greg started his career in 1994 when he joined the United States Air Force as a security forces member. After he competed his enlistment, the Colorado State Patrol hired Greg. During his tenure with the Colorado State Patrol, he served as a Field Training Officer, Background Investigator, Public Information Officer, and night shift supervisor.

In addition to being a handler, Deputy Howden is a Field Training Officer and is attached to the SWAT Team as a handler/operator. Greg is the department’s certified narcotic/explosive detector instructor. In 2005 he taught his first K-9 academy.

K9 ZiehenIn May 2003, Greg was paired with his partner K-9 Ziehen. K-9 Ziehen is a longhaired German Shepherd. Ziehen was born on February 20, 2001. K-9 Ziehen is certified in both patrol and explosive detection. K-9 Ziehen and his handler are assigned to the patrol division and attached to the SWAT Team. The purchase of K-9 Ziehen was made possible by funds received for homeland security efforts.

 

 

K-9 Taz and Deputy Greg Wilson

K-9 Taz was placed in service in 2003 to 2005

K-9 Taz a Dutch Sheppard that was certified German DPO2 and PSP2 (Polizeispuerhundpruefung 2)

  • His biggest drug find was 26 pounds of Marijuana in a shipment and $300,000 behind a false wall in a home.
  • He saved numerous lives by tracking missing people and endangered suspects .
  • On one occasion a suicidal homicidal suspect attempted to assault Deputy Wilson with a 2x4 with nails sticking out and K9 Taz apprehended the suspect saving both his handlers and the suspects life.

K9 Max was placed into service in 2002.

K-9 Max a two year old Dutch Shepherd and he was certified in the German PSP 1 (Polizeispuerhundpruefung 1) standards.

Deputy Wilson was the Sheriffs Office's first Patrol instructor certified by Utah P.O.S.T.'s academy.

On a multi-jursidictional officer involved shooting K-9 Max tracked down an armed suspect and apprehended him hiding in trees in bushes four hours after the incident started.

 

 

K-9 Astro and Deputy Greg Wilson

Serving 1998-2002

K9 Astro was placed into service in 1998.

K-9 Astro was a German Sheppard and was certifiedin German PSP1/PSP2, SCH3 (Schutzhund 3), FH (German Schutzhund tracking title), WPO (World Police Dog Title), DPO2, AD (German endurance test).

In 1998 K9 Astro participated in the Police Dog World Championships in Lubeck, Germany

K9 imported as an eight week old puppy and was trained to the level of certified Police Dog.

K-9 Cindy and Deputy Tom Barrella:

K9 Cindy was placed into service at Northglenn Police Department in September 1997 until July 1998 when Deputy Barrella completed a lateral transfer to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. K9 Cindy was a Belgian Malinois.

K9 Cindy was placed into service in September 1999 with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

K9 Cindy has had the following accomplishments in her career:

  • Achieved certification as a narcotics detection K9 in September 1997 by Narcotics K9 Association.
  • Certified in the German Drug Standard of Polizeispurhundprufungen in January of 1999.
  • Completed the course of Domestic Canine Interdiction sponsored by The Criminal Justice Institute in September 1999.
  • Seized over $15,000.00 of cash on drug related money sniffs.
  • Located a ¼ pound of Cocaine in 1997.
  • Located a stolen assault rifle associated with drugs in 1997.
  • Located marijuana, which also led to locating 70 stolen credit cards in 1997 and stopped a white-collar crime ring.
  • In September of 1999, K9 Cindy located 5 ounces of crack cocaine, $2,600.00, and a handgun and incarcerated a gang of felony career criminals.
  • Deputy Barrella became the Sheriff's Office first Narcotics Detector instructor that was trained under the standards of the Utah P.O.S.T. academy.

K9 Watson was placed into service in the summer of 1994. His breed is a Belgian Malinois.

K9 Watson was trained in Patrol and Narcotics Detection.

K9 Watson and Deputy McCoy were involved in numerous Felony and Misdemeanor apprehensions of suspects.

K9 Spike was placed into service in 1998. Her breed was a Belgian Malinois she was trained in Patrol and Narcotics Detection.

 

 

 

 

 

 


K-9 Amigo and Deputy Russ Slade

1989-1997

K9 Amigo was placed into service in the fall of 1989. He was a 100 pound German Sheppard that was trained in Patrol and Narcotics Detection.

K9 Amigo received certification in the U.S.P.C.A. and received his PD-1 (Police Dog One).

K9 Amigo responded to over 1200 K9 calls for service including one in which Amigo bit and bent a car's license plate to a 90 degree angle to reveal a stash of marijuana.

Deputy Slade was the first certified K9 instructor for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. He trained K9s Watson, Spike, Sorro, Jason, and Amigo.

K9 Sorro was placed into service in 1989 and was the Sheriff's Office first K9. Sorro was a 85 pound German Sheppard trained in both Patrol and Narcotics detection.

K9 Jason was placed into service in the fall of 1989. He was a 120 pound German Sheppard trained in both Patrol and Narcotics detection.

K-9 Jason obtained the USPCA Police Dog 1 certification in 1989.

He was credited with locating numerous armed suspects in the rural areas of Douglas County and numerous Narcotic apprehensions including locating over $40,000 dollars of counterfeit currency stored with large quantities of Marijuana.
