Before you can begin your career as a deputy sheriff, you must have obtained your Colorado P.O.S.T. Certification. As a new deputy sheriff you will be considered for a position either in the Detention or Patrol Divisions based on your qualifications. Currently, to start your employment in the Patrol Division, you must possess a minimum of two years full-time patrol-related civilian law enforcement experience, and this experience must be within the last three years. The Detention Division requires no previous law enforcement experience to start as a detentions deputy. Detentions and Patrol both have extensive field training programs.
As you gain experience, you may qualify to work in other areas such as investigations, traffic, community resources, D.A.R.E., school resource officer program, court services, training and tactical operations or a variety of other assignments.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office provides applications to those individual who have successfully passed a general aptitude test administered by our agency.
The application process is divided into two phases. During the first phase applicants complete a basic aptitude test. Those who achieve the cutting score are asked to complete and return an application. The second phase consists of a series of exams, including: background, physical, integrity interview, polygraph and psychological.
To be considered you must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
- Have a basic P.O.S.T. certificate from the State of Colorado
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Possess basic computer skills
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Have never been convicted of a felony
- Have the ability to perform all essential functions of the job.
- Have absolutely had no illegal drug usage within the last three years and no alcohol related traffic offenses within the last five years.
- No domestic violence conviction.
Entry Level Salary: $4010 per month. Laterals depending on qualifications.
