It is the goal of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to research and obtain grant funding for projects and equipment purchases that have been identified as “qualifying” for application. The Sheriff’s Office has one full time position designated to grant administration and research. Although the Grant Administrator also assists with budget tasks, the primary focus of this position is in granting. The Sheriff’s Office has been very successful in receive funding for a wide variety of law enforcement related programs and equipment. The majority of the grants have been awarded through state and federal funding.
Recent Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Grants
Colorado Department of Transportation Safety: CLICK-IT-OR-TICKET Grant
This state funding supports the CLICK-IT-OR-TICKET seatbelt campaign. In an effort to enforce the seat belt law, these funds are distributed by the State on an annual basis and the amount varies from year to year. In 2008, Douglas County received $3,000, which is used to pay overtime to deputies for their participation in the May seat belt enforcement campaign. Grant period: May of each year.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office also received $10,000 for the 2007/2008 Teen Seat Belt enforcement Program. Grant period: October 2007 through May 2008.
Colorado Department of Transportation Safety: LEAF Grant
The Colorado Department of Transportation Safety offers LEAF (Law Enforcement Assistance Fund) funding to assist law enforcement agencies in their efforts to enforce DUI laws within Colorado. LEAF is used to pay overtime hours worked during scheduled DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout Douglas County. Grant period: January 1st , through December 31st of eligible years. 2008 is our off year but we will apply for 2009 funding.
Office of Domestic Preparedness: Homeland Security Grant
Douglas County is within the North Central Region of the Colorado Homeland Security plan. The North Central Region collectively submits a grant proposal for homeland security funding through yearly applications. Any awards that are given out are determined by the regional board and there is no guarantee that the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will be selected to receive grant funding.
Colorado 18th Judicial District: VALE Grant
The 18th Judicial District provides Victim Assistance in Law Enforcement (VALE) grant funding to organizations that assist victims of crime. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office provides on-scene crisis intervention, criminal justice advocacy, referrals and follow-up support to crime victims and citizens in cases of sudden or violent death. In 2008, Douglas County was awarded $30,000 to partially fund a current victim advocate position for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and $2,000 for the purpose of providing brochures within our community. Grant period: July 1, 2008 through June 31, 2009
Colorado Division of Criminal Justice/Office for Victims of Crime: VOCA Grant
With funds through the U.S., Department of Justice, the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice, Office for Victims of Crime offers Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding to support to organizations that assist victims of crime in their efforts to comply with regulations related to victim rights issues. The VOCA grant partially funds a current victim advocate position for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. In 2008, Douglas County was awarded $40,000 to support this position. January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency: ICAC Grant
In 2001, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency (OJJDP) awarded Douglas County with an award to create an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force. In 2003, the Colorado Springs Police Department became the fiduciary for OJJDP funding in support of the ICAC task force and Douglas County receives sub grant awards each year. The sub grant awards are typically in the $20,000 to $30,000 range. Grant period: January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2008.
U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance: Bulletproof Vest Program (BPV)
Each year, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is eligible to apply for funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), which is solely for the purpose of reimbursement for the purchase of bulletproof vests for our deputies. The amount of the reimbursement varies from year to year based on the formulas established by the Department of Justice. Grant period: N/A
Wal-Mart:
Wal-Mart accepts applications for the Safe Neighborhood Heroes grant on an annual basis for a maximum of a $2000.00 award. The Sheriffs Office applied for a grant to assist the National Night Out Campaign. Wal-Mart awarded the Sheriff's Office $1000.00 for the National Night Out Campaign in 2007.
Target:
Target annually accepts grant applications from various community organizations. The Sheriffs Office applied for a grant for operational tools and educational materials for the Community Resources Unit. The award is generally between $500.00 and $1000.00.
US Department of Justice, Justice Assistance Grant Direct Award
Each year, the US Department of Justice awards law enforcement agencies funding which is to be used to support law enforcement functions, projects, or the purchase of specific equipment. The award is calculated by the US Department of Justice based on a formula that includes our uniform crime reporting (UCR) statistics. Douglas County Sheriff's Office was awarded $29,258.00 in 2007 which was used to purchase technology equipment and radios for our Community Safety Volunteer Program.
