Our detention facility has a current capacity of 464 inmates.  As valued members of the Detention Division team civilian specialists perform a variety of administrative tasks for the purpose of assisting deputies in the management of inmates.  You could be assigned to: booking and fingerprinting inmates, operating a variety of security systems, supervising inmate workers, or other tasks related to the safety and security of the jail.  It is a great way to start a rewarding law enforcement career.  

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office provides applications to those individual who have successfully passed a general aptitude test administered by our agency.

The application/testing portion consists of two phases: Phase 1-Aptitude Test, and Application and Phase II – Background, Physical, Integrity Interview, Polygraph and Psychological.

In Phase I you must successfully pass a written general aptitude test prior to completing a written application.  To be considered you must meet all of the following minimum requirements: 

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess basic computer skills
  • Have a High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Have never been convicted of a felony
  • Have the ability to perform all essential functions of the job.
  • Have absolutely had no illegal drug usage within the last three years and no alcohol related traffic offenses within the last five years.
  • No domestic violence related convictions              

Entry Level Salary:  $2900 per month

Often times Detention Specialists decide that becoming a Detention Deputy is something they would be interested in as a career change. The Sheriff's Office, recommend they attend the Highlands Ranch Public Safety Training Institute. At the conclusion of this academy the specialist can be promoted to Deputy, if or when a Deputy position is available. This Academy is a way for a Detentions Specialist to seek a career as a POST certified officer if they are interested in becoming a deputy while employed as a specialist.
