K-9 Unit

K-9 Freia

This is one of the most favorite teams at the sheriff’s office. Our K-9s are trained to protect their deputy handlers and save their lives.

The K9s are trained to search for and detect drugs, track humans, arrest suspects, clear buildings,  and take part in public demonstrations.

The unit was established in 1989 with three K-9s. Today, there are six teams.

The K-9 teams patrol with their handles to respond more quickly to calls.

The dogs are assigned to a deputy and live with the deputy and his family. The team usually stays together about six to 8 years until the K-9 retires. When that happens, the handler has the first option to keep the dog as their pet.
