Race-A-Cop Scholarship Program

Bandimere Speedway

A shot from the start line at the 1998 Labor Day Weekend High School Drags

The Race-A-Cop program was designed to promote positive interaction between Cops and Kids through some common interests; cars, speed, and music. The objectives for this program are:

2006 Scholarship Program

  • To provide education relating to responsible driving
  • To provide education relating to the effects of alcohol and drugs
  • To provide a means of positive interaction between youth and law enforcement through common interests
  • To provide scholarships to graduating seniors

The Race-A-Cop vehicle is used for such events as the High School Drag Series, stereo competitions, car shows, parades, school events and special events. Deputies and high school students do maintenance and modifications to the car. The car is funded through donations from corporate sponsors, citizens and groups within the county.

To carry out the commitments made to the youth of Douglas County, the Race-A-Cop Program established a scholarship fund. The Sheriff's Office considers this an investment in the future and believes that their members are helping to provide deserving students with an opportunity to make a positive contribution to society as a whole.

Scholarship

In 2007, the Race A-Cop Program awarded 6 scholarships to graduating seniors from Ponderosa, Chaparral, Mountain Vista, and Douglas County High Schools. Candidates had to demonstrate their dedication to responsible driving; participate in an educational program relating to the effects of drugs or alcohol; be a mentor to other students, or volunteer within their communities. In the year 2008 program, applications are due by February 28, 2008.
