Laser Technology for Accident Reconstruction

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team's primary mission is to investigate and reconstruct fatal and serious injury motor vehicle traffic crashes that often result in the prosecution of felony vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges.

Team members are trained as Traffic Crash Reconstructionists with training in the areas of: collision analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping and computer aided drawing programs.

The Crash Reconstruction Team’s investigations include the Examination of the Roadway and Physical Evidence as well as Vehicle Damage Analysis to reconstruct the crash. The team utilizes a Laser_Technology_Inc. (LTI) MapStar Angle Encoder to obtain scene measurements and produce a computer-generated diagram of the scene to aid in the successful prosecution of these cases. The LTI MapStar Angle Encoder is an advanced surveying system that utilizes an LTI Impulse Laser and reflective prism to obtain extremely accurate measurements. The measurements are then downloaded into a data collector or laptop computer. Utilizing the Visual_Statement_&_Vista_FX Reconstruction computer program the measurements are then downloaded and prepared into 2D and 3D crash and crime scene diagrams.
