A VIN verification is a physical inspection of the car, truck, camper or motorcycle’s unique identification number for titling and registration.
All vehicles must be registered in Colorado unless
- Exempt from registration.
- Temporarily registered.
- For the first 36 hours after purchase, a buyer can drive the vehicle without registering it only if they bought it on a weekend or legal holiday or between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. or if they purchased it from someone who is not a motor vehicle dealer. The vehicle can only be driven from where the seller kept it to where the buyer intends to keep it if the buyer has a bill of sale and proof of insurance in the vehicle.
If you need Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) verification to buy or sell a vehicle or to register a vehicle from another state, please call 303-660-7500.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office staff may come to your home or place of work and conduct the inspection. The $8 fee will collected at the Department of Motor Vehicle during registration and will be remitted to the Sheriff’s Office.
VIN Verifications are performed by our Community Safety Volunteers Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The wait time depends on what else is happening across Douglas County. So, please let dispatchers know how long you will be at your residence when requesting a VIN verification.
