A VIN verification is a physical inspection of the car, truck, camper or motorcycle’s unique identification number for titling and registration.

All vehicles must be registered in Colorado unless

  • Exempt from registration.
  • Temporarily registered.
  • For the first 36 hours after purchase, a buyer can drive the vehicle without registering it only if they bought it on a weekend or legal holiday or between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. or if they purchased it from someone who is not a motor vehicle dealer.  The vehicle can only be driven from where the seller kept it to where the buyer intends to keep it if the buyer has a bill of sale and proof of insurance in the vehicle.

If you need Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) verification to buy or sell a vehicle or to register a vehicle from another state, please call 303-660-7500.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office staff may come to your home or place of work and conduct the inspection. The $8 fee will collected at the Department of Motor Vehicle during registration and will be remitted to the Sheriff’s Office.
