Motorcycle Unit

The motorcycle unit performs traffic enforcement throughout the county. Motorcycles are more maneuverable than the more tradition police vehicles, permitting motor officers to negotiate traffic more easily and rapidly respond to traffic crashes and other calls for service. Motorcycles can move through congested traffic or use the shoulder of the roadway to provide coverage at collision scenes, often more quickly and safely than an officer in a traditional police vehicle.

The motorcycle officers’ primary function is traffic law enforcement. Motorists will notice our motorcycles all over Douglas County but especially on major arterials, problem areas, neighborhoods, high volume traffic areas and in school zones. Our deputies are also very active apprehending aggressive drivers, conducting DUI enforcement, and completing crash investigations.  The quick acceleration and maneuverability of the motorcycle allows our deputies to stop the dangerous drivers quickly before they can cause an accident.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office maintains a fleet of Harley-Davidson enforcement motorcycles.

Motorcycle training is a very physically and mentally demanding course. The deputies must successfully complete an 80-hour training class and a minimum of 40-hour field training program with a senior motorcycle officer before operating the motorcycle in an enforcement capacity. Officers learn skills in braking, turning, pursuit riding, and dignitary escort procedures. They keep their skills fresh with annual testing and periodic in-service training.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Unit consists of members assigned to the Traffic Unit that have successfully completed the grueling training course.  The deputies assigned to the Motorcycle Unit also participate in multi-agency training with the other Denver Metro area law enforcement motorcycle units.  These joint training evolutions are required so that the collective group of agencies / officers can safely and efficiently work together for large scale dignitary escorts, funerals, and other designated events.
